Degrau
Traditional Carioca in Leblon
April 1, 2023 • 2 min read • 295 wordsOne of my favorite restaurants in Rio de Janeiro is Restaurante Degrau in Leblon. This place is a classic of Carioca gastronomy, with almost 60 years of history and quality. The name comes from a step at the entrance that made many people stumble; the restaurant moved but the name stuck and now it’s part of the place’s charm. By the way, next door is Tropeço, a more casual bar from the same owners, with a similar kitchen.
Restaurante Degrau is very traditional and is showing its age. Despite this, it is still one of our favorite restaurants, with the same waiters for many years, ideal for lunch with family or friends. The menu has great variety and offers everything from typical Brazilian cuisine dishes such as feijoada and moqueca to Portuguese specialties such as salted cod (bacalhau) and octopus (polvo). I recommend the Bacalhau Degrau, which comes with potatoes, onions, eggs and olives, and is delicious. The cod croquette (bolinho de bacalhau), in my opinion, is the best in Leblon, large, very crisp and crunchy. To accompany it, nothing better than a cold beer or a well-made caipirinha. The dishes are all well served and where it says “for two people” it usually serves three if you are not super hungry. The menu is long and anything can be adapted. The pastéis are relatively expensive but the dough is delicious and quite different from other more common pastéis. I recommend pastéis de queijo com cebola e pastéis de camarão.
If you are looking for a place to eat with your family in Leblon, be sure to check out Restaurante Degrau. You will be surprised by the quality and taste of the dishes and will want to come back more often.
